Roads in Corsica: Calvi to Porto
The road from Calvi to Porto is the narrowest, windiest road we have ever been on. Our car has 6 gears but on this road, it will be lucky if it goes higher than 3rd! Our speed is hovering around 35 km/h. The map tells us it takes two and a half hours to drive the distance of 74 kilometres between the two towns! The scenery is quite spectacular. The cliffs change in colour from iron grey to reddish-brown. The road twists and turns. There are many, many cyclists on the road and sometimes we just have to sit behind them and drive very slowly as it is impossible to see around the bends to overtake. Cyclists come speeding around the bends towards us. Motor bikes whiz past us in both directions! There are cars, caravans, the occasional truck as well as groups of walkers! The view over the bay is stunning. The Corsicans have built small stone walls along much of the roadway and occasionally there is a lay-by for photo stops. All of a sudden around the bend appear a dozen 'mouflon', the Corsican sheep on the road. One is even lying down having a rest! I am glad there are no cars coming the other way! We just recover and relax again when....Oh my goodness! Around another bend three cows are walking sedately across the road! Soon we are in the little beachside village of Porto where, to our surprise, we find a eucalyptus forest!! In fact, the gum trees lining the street are enormous! Bigger than any I've seen at home. I ask the lady at the tourist information centre how old they are. "About 50 years old," she tells me. "They were planted just after World War II." I browse in a couple of shops and then stare!! Right in front of me is a stand of necklaces - all made from gumnuts!! I'll see Snugglepot and Cuddlepie soon, I'm sure......
We stayed at Hotel Capo d'Orto *** in Porto Large room (205) comfy bed, separate toilet, balcony looking towards the sea but with a stunning view of the cliffs in front of us. The shower was a bit tricky to work out how to turn it on but worked OK. Airconditioned. Breakfast is continental. Two types of cereal, no fresh fruit only tinned, only natural yoghurt, bread, ham, cheese, fresh eggs with a boiler to cook yourself, croissants, pastries and Corsican biscuits. Quite satisfying.
