Roads in Corsica: Bastia to Calvi

image We are approaching the roundabout. "At the roundabout, turn right. First exit", says our TomTom. Colin does exactly that and veers right!! I catch my breath in fright, forgetting momentarily I'm on the 'wrong' side of the road. Today is the first time Colin has driven in Europe for many years! He had uploaded our faithful TomTom with the latest maps of Corsica before we left home and having "him" in the car with us makes navigating easy. We travel through little villages and green countryside. Red poppies are growing wild all along the road. image Our hotel is situated a five minute drive from the town of Calvi and from our veranda we can see the medieval Citadel sitting high above the port. There is a cruise ship in the harbour. We catch the hotel shuttle into the town. It drops us at the marina which is crammed with boats of all descriptions! image Little fishing boats, dive boats, smaller cruise boats for the local tourists and yachts big and small. From skiffs to millionaire size. All vying for a berth. We walk around the harbour, past the many restaurants, bars and gelatarias, towards the citadel. Looking across the harbour we have a magnificent view of Monte Cinto, 2706m high (Mt Kosciuszko is 2228m) and the highest mountain in Corsica, still covered with snow. (I didn't know till today that Corsica has ski fields!). We walk up all the steps to the Citadel and explore this quaint little town with its tiny alleyways, a couple of restaurants and tourist shops and the Catholic church. imageThere is also a plaque remembering American servicemen killed when their warplane crashed during World War II. As we walk back to the bus stop, we watch three small boys riding their bikes in and out of the car park, ducking their heads as they went under the boom gate! C'est la vie.....

Never get so busy travelling

that you forget to have an icecream on the way
