New Park Hotel, Kilkenny

The View from our Window

We arrive at the hotel at 6 o'clock at night and walk straight into a wedding reception at the hotel.  Guests are enjoying pre-dinner cocktails in the foyer!  We are quite hungry as we haven't eaten since lunchtime and goodness - those hors-d'hoeuvres look so good!  We negotiate our suitcases through the guests to reception and check in.   Our room on the second floor is large, airy and has a lovely view over the back lawn and garden.

Scott's Bar and Brasserie

The hotel has both a restaurant and a bistro - Scotts Bar and Brasserie.  We have a look at both menus and choose the Bistro.  It is cheaper and the mains sound really good.  In fact, we have such a delicious dinner with excellent service on that first night that we eat there on all three nights of our stay.  All our meals are excellent and there is a good selection of mains and desserts to choose from on the menu.  Everything is freshly cooked and the staff are excellent.

Room 236

Both the  room and bathroom are really large with plenty of space for two suitcases, two pull-a-long cabin bags, a backpack and assorted other items!  The window looks over a garden with the greenest of lawns and a tree big enough for a rope swing which some of the children enjoy using during the day.  It is a very quiet and restful room, and the two comfy armchairs near the window are well used.  The bed is comfy, there are tea and coffee provided with a kettle with 2 complimentary bottles of water.

Especially good - the bedroom has plenty of easy to access power points and good lighting.  The bathroom has  a walk-in shower with a separate bath, plenty of shelf space for toiletries, large fluffy white towels and a plentiful supply of Orla Kealy toiletries is supplied each day.

I didn't like - the hairdryer is fixed to a drawer in the bedroom and cannot be moved.  It only has one heat setting which is too hot and the only speed is on or off!!  The iron is only a dry iron.

Breakfast

Breakfast is buffet style with cereals, fruit, bread, juice, cheeses, pastries, scrambled egg and the usual hot food, but there is also an a-la-carte menu for eggs, omelettes, porridge and more.  We ordered from the menu and food and service were excellent.

Other Amenities

The hotel has a health club and spa as well as an indoor swimming pool.  We didn't try these.  The Terrace is  a pleasant spot for a coffee or snack.  Afternoon High Tea is served daily on The Terrace or the Lounge.
