Exploring Fribourg

The first coat of paint has dried and it is definitely not the same colour as the other two walls.  Fi tries to match her wall to the colour chart on her computer. With a colour chosen, Colin heads off to the paint shop before it closes for lunch. Oh no! Tomas who speaks English is not there! Colin negotiates his paint colour anyway and heads back to Fi's apartment for another couple of hours of painting. I am keen to follow the walking path that is marked on the map of Fribourg. It is a little cloudy so I take my umbrella just in case. I start at the cathedral. The old town of Fribourg is built high up on a hill overlooking the Sarine river which meanders right around the town, so much so that there are at least ten bridges across it, including a double decker bridge, Pont de Zähringen. From the cathedral I walk towards Grand'Rue which will take me to the river. I stop at the top. The footpath is all steps down a very steep slope. I count 212 steps!! And I'm only about halfway down. I continue walking down until I come to Middle Bridge where there is a viewing platform which looks back up towards the cathedral. Now I realise just how high Fribourg is above the river!! AND I have to get back to the top! I walk across to the Bern Bridge which is Fribourg's last covered wooden bridge built in 1653. It starts to sprinkle with rain so I decide to head back up the steps into town. I walk up the cobblestoned main street which is now a mall and turn into the Coop supermarket. I buy raspberries, blueberries, passionfruit and a container of the local vanilla icecream. Dessert tonight!! Back at Fi's the colour is not quite right. It is amazing how many variations of offwhite there are. This one is too grey so back to Tomas to choose another!! For more information see www.fribourgtourisme.ch

Never get so busy travelling

that you forget to have an icecream on the way
