The Mineral Baths, Rigi Kaltbad

Today was a truly relaxing Sunday. A nice long, leisurely breakfast looking across at the Chapel Bridge. After yesterday's rain, the snow has completely melted in Luzern. There were some clouds about but also blue sky. The top of Mt Pilatus could be seen above the cloud layer. We'd thought about going to Mt Pilatus but repairs on the cable car have shut it down until May. For relaxation though, what better way than soaking in thermal baths. The Mineralbad and Spa at Rigi Kaltbad are just over an hour from Luzern. The first forty-five minutes is by boat from Luzern to Weggis, very pleasant indeed. A fifteen minute walk to the cable car station then ten minutes on the cable car and we are there. At the exit from the cable car station at Rigi Kaltbad is the entry to the Spa! Wow! A huge atrium opens up before us. Through it are the change rooms and then the largest of the pools. This is the deepest pool, around 1.5m deep and heated to around 30 degrees Celsius. Around the edges of the pool are bubble jets which give fabulous massages. The pools are built on two levels directly underneath the town square where the mineral waters come directly from the mountain. The pools are lit by large skylights and these skylights are set into the pavement of the town square in such a way that no one can peer in from above but the light filters into the pool area. The largest pool has an opening to an outdoor pool. We swim through it and it opens to a magnificent panorama of the mountains. There are more bubble jets out there, also a sun deck and deck chairs for the brave. It is surrounded by snow! After about an hour and feeling very relaxed, we decide to explore downstairs. Here we find Crystalbad, a shallow square pool heated to 35degrees C. The water is so warm and the room dimly lit with just the one skylight that I almost go to sleep. It is incredibly relaxing. There are no clocks in the rooms so it is possible for an hour to go by without even noticing! We eventually clamber out feeling sooooo relaxed! A cable car ride and a boat trip back to Luzern followed by a delicious dinner at the hotel. A very, very pleasant Sunday.
