The Matterhorn, Zermatt
My all-time favourite view - the Matterhorn. Imposing, majestic, awe-inspiring, forbidding - there is no single word to describe it. The view from our balcony this morning with the early morning sunshine is stunning. There are three main routes up the mountain from Zermatt. The highest one goes to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, 3883m, and then, if you are a keen skier, it is possible to ski down the side of Monte Rosa into Cervinia, Italy. We go as far up as Trockener Steg, 2939m, as we want to travel the other routes this afternoon. The view from Trockener Steg is flat-faced, one dimensional and, while it is still spectacular, in my opinion, not as dramatic as the view from Zermatt which is three-dimensional. My ultimate picture-perfect view! We stop at Schwarzsee, 2585m on the way back to Zermatt for lunch on our balcony. Bread rolls and raspberry tarts from Fuchs, the famous Swiss baker. After lunch, we head to the lift to take us up to Rothorn, 3103m and the opposite side of the mountain to Trockener Steg. On the way down we take the cable car across to Gant, 2223m. The network of cable cars, gondolas, chairlifts and trains is enormous! Clean, efficient, fast and reliable! Tourists pay CHF99 just to catch the lift to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. The lady at the Tourist Office told us to buy a day ski lift ticket and we could do every lift on the mountain for CHF75! It was a phenomenal day of views and fun! Underneath all the photos is the ski map which is available from the Tourist Office and the ski lift ticket offices. It shows all the stations and height above sea level for each.
