Grimsey Island, Iceland

Grimsey is the only part of Iceland that touches the Arctic Circle and is a bird watchers paradise. It is about 40km north of the mainland of Iceland and is completely treeless. It is green and lush with fewer than 100 residents. Most people go to Grimsey to receive their 'Arctic Circle Certificate' and have their photo taken at the Arctic Circle sign. We were no exception. Our captain was already there when we arrived with one of his officers. They had poured small cups of Aquavit for us to drink once we had crossed the Arctic circle. It tasted like liquorice and was quite disgusting! The grass near me got a little extra fluid today. We also walked up to the bird cliffs. Those pesky terns did dive bomb occasionally but we were prepared for them! The island has a small airport whose runway needs to be cleared of birds before a plane can land!!

Never get so busy travelling

that you forget to have an icecream on the way
