Bangkok to Zurich via Helsinki
'Your seat is on the left, Madam', the stewardess said as I board the aircraft. 'Kittos', I reply, the Finnish word for 'thank you' being the only word I know in Finnish. Our flight to Zurich is via Helsinki with Finnair and this time, we are flying Business class. We are offered a drink as soon as we are settled in our seats and we relax before takeoff. The seats are super comfy, the cabin is spacious and airy in colours of pale blue and white and the cabin crew bustle around hanging up coats and handing out newspapers. After takeoff, we are given our lunch menu with a choice of both entrees and mains. But there is a problem. The entertainment system isn't working. It is impossible to watch movies or TV shows and the music channels only become available half way through the flight. But I love watching the changing scenery from the window. We fly across the huge river deltas of Bangladesh and India to the rugged mountain ranges of the 'stans'- Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan... keeping on the western side of the Himalayas. My concentration is broken with the arrival of lunch. A crisp white tablecloth is placed over my tray table and a bowl of broccoli soup is placed on it. I am offered cheese sticks and a warm bread roll. Beef burgundy with roasted potato wedges and steamed vegetables is my choice of mains. Both courses are delicious. A cheese platter follows, then Haagen-Dazs icecream, petit fours and coffee and tea. Not being a wine connoisseur, I enjoyed a French Sauterne with my meal. By early afternoon, the sun is coming through my window so I raise my footrest (exactly like the perfect ottoman) to stretch out my legs and order my favourite Cloudberry liqueur. Colin brings me a handful of Fazer chocolates from a bowl in the galley! Life can't get any better! We arrive in Helsinki right on schedule and have just over an hour before our flight to Zurich departs. Helsinki airport is sooo crowded! The shops are crowded, people are scurrying to gates, the little restaurants and coffee shops are doing a roaring trade. I wander through Stockmanns, the Finnish department store and several of the smaller Nordic shops, browsing the china and glassware, electrical gadgets and homewares. We board our flight to Zurich. It is cloudy as we leave Helsinki. Dinner is served. The main course is Thai style butternut squash curry with coconut cream and jasmine rice, created by Tomi Bjorck, Chef and restauranteur from the restaurants Farang and Gaijin, in Helsinki, Finland. Truly delicious. Followed by another glass of Cloudberry liqueur. What bliss. The clouds clear as we fly over Switzerland. The weather clears completely to blue sky and sunshine. The neatly set out fields below us are a mix of greens interspersed with the yellow of canola and the brown of some left fallow. There are cows in some and occasionally a field of sheep, their whiteness contrasting with the vivid green. In fact, as we land, the fields almost connect with the runway! A perfect landing right on time. I have thoroughly enjoyed my day flying Finnair. We flew Finnair Business Class Airbus A330-300 The seats are very comfortable for sitting but for sleeping, they are not completely flat on the Bangkok-Helsinki flights. There is plenty of legroom and a basic amenities pack with socks, eye shad and ear plugs. Toiletries are available on request. The food was very good and the service excellent . However the entertainment system didn't work for most of the flight. There were plenty of snacks available - my favourite, of course, Fazer chocolate, Hagen-Daaz ice-cream and cloudberry liqueur!! Our flight connection time was short so we only had enough time in the new lounge in Helsinki for a cup of tea and some Fazer chocolate! The flight from Helsinki to Zurich is all Economy class seating with 3 seats on each side of the aisle. The first four rows are curtained off for Business class with the middle seat left vacant. www.finnair.com We stayed at The Park Inn Hotel by Radisson Small room with a separate toilet but the basin was next to the television and the shower was in the middle of the room. There was no privacy for getting dressed and undressed and nowhere to put clothes and towels etc. There are tea/coffee making facilities in the room which is good. Breakfast was OK. It was slightly cheaper if it was ordered the night before. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the airport. www.parkinn.com
