Rauma, Finland
Roast reindeer washed down with Lapin Kulta beer, lignonberry parfait with icecream, Fazer chocolate and cloudberry liqueur. The perfect Finnish dinner for me and the perfect end to a perfect day out. We are in Rauma on the west coast of Finland, just over 200 km from Helsinki. Old Rauma is a fabulous example of an old Nordic wooden town, one of very few in Finland that the Germans didn't burn to the ground during the second world war. Its market square is almost the geographical centre and there are plenty of quaint little shops and yummy cafes around it. We enjoy delicious Finnish biscuits and a coffee before setting off on our walking tour. The Tourist Information Centre gave us an excellent detailed map which we follow. The narrow little streets and alleyways of the old town meander higgledy-piggledy all over the place medieval style. The wooden houses and buildings are painted in pastel shades, pink, green, yellow, blue, beige, cream...... Many of the gardens are full of flowers and well cared for. It is easy to see why Old Rauma is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We find a shady spot on the banks of the river and have a picnic lunch. The breeze blows the trees ever so gently and a family of ducks float by. The Church of the Holy Cross is nearby and we go inside. It celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2012. It was originally built by the Franciscan monks but has been a Lutheran church since 1640. There are some beautiful paintings on the walls that date from the Middle Ages. There appears to be a lady sitting in a pew reading from a bible but on closer inspection, it is a lifelike statue. I was sure it was a real person from a distance! We cross the bridge and walk along the river. There are museums to explore and lace-making, for which Rauma is famous, to see. We finish up back in the market square. Which cafe should we go to? We cannot make up our minds..... We try the first one we come to and sit out the back at a little table in the late afternoon sunshine and have our coffee watching the world go by... What a glorious day.
