Bangkok to Sydney
7:30am, Immigration area, Sydney Airport. I have an ePassport so I am directed to the self-serve queue. I must insert my passport into the machine with the photo facedown on the screen. "Remove your glasses", I'm told. "I can't see without them", I reply. No answer.
I dutifully put my passport into the machine, wait till the screen says 'Remove Passport and then move to the line where I have to remove my glasses and look directly at the camera. I stand on the feet picture and look straight ahead. I'm not really sure where the camera is so I just stare straight ahead. But I can't read the instructions on the screen (where IS the screen?). Eventually a serious looking man in uniform tells me I must line up and see an immigration officer at the counter. It happens every time!! Am I the only person who can't read the screen without my glasses?? (I tried to explain to one immigration officer once that I wore glasses to actually see the screen but he thought I was being rude!). I'd have to say I don't feel too bad as I actually managed to sleep for a couple of hours on the flight. Having used my Frequent Flyer points to upgrade to Business class, I enjoyed the flat bed and Qantas PJs, the Payot skincare, (even deodorant!), although my request for a second blanket was met with "I'm sorry madam. We have run out!" Never mind, I had my faithful track pants with me!! It was good to be home though. Both Tiger the cat AND Harry the dog were very pleased to see us!
