Greenwich Village, New York
Greenwich Village, or simply 'The Village' as the locals refer to it, is a largely residential area on the west side of Lower Manhattan. While not as bohemian as it apparently used to be, it still has a real village atmosphere. Lots of little coffee shops, boutiques and eateries. Almost in the middle of the village is Washington Square Park. Our hotel is just around the corner from the imposing Washington Square Arch, the most imposing of the entries to the park! The arch was built in 1892 and modelled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It replaced the original wooden arch built 3 years earlier to celebrate one hundred years since the inauguration of George Washington as president. We walk under the arch, past the fountain and out to the street. It's a beautiful sunny day and there are lots of people outside. Kids are playing basketball in the park, there is a man in the street feeding the pigeons and we are enjoying a relaxing day walking around this quaint village of Greenwich. My only regret - not noticing the Grom gelateria in Greenwich! A must on my next trip!!
