Troy

'This may not be Troy,' our guide told us. 'Archaeologists are not 100% sure but they think it is.' The site was first excavated in 1871 by a German called Schliemann who was fascinated by the legends of Troy and had a burning desire to find all the treasure. As a result of his illegal and damaging excavations, he destroyed much of the site and removed many of the treasures he found unlawfully from the country. Tour guides speak of him in disgust! Recent excavations have discovered that were 9 different settlements in Troy. The first one, Troy I is at least 5000 years old while Troy IX was built by the Romans. Troy VII is considered to be the Troy of the Trojan War period. Troy was built on a harbour but this was silted up by the rivers many years ago and is now farmland. Troy is only half an hour's drive from Çanakkale and we spent about two hours there. IMG_0357
The View Over the "Harbour"
We stayed at Çanakkale while we visited Gallipoli and Troy The Kolin Hotel Room 1517 Really nice room with a view over the Dardanelles. It was very relaxing watching the ships sail past. Comfy bed, good shower, lots of toiletries, enormous breakfast spread and excellent and tasty buffet dinner each night. The restaurant overlooked the water so a delightful spot for a meal.

Never get so busy travelling

that you forget to have an icecream on the way
