Les 12h de l'Auge, Fribourg, Switzerland
Jaws comes towards us!!! We are walking from the cathedral down all the steps in brilliant sunshine towards the two-storey Zähringen bridge in Fribourg. We intended to cross the river and walk past the 13th century Bern Gate and do a complete circuit of Fribourg along the river bank and across three more bridges. But our pathway is cordoned off with tape. Jaws flashes past!!! Then an old car! Then a train!! I realise these are actually cyclists! We follow the tape a little way up and we are now in the old town of Fribourg. All the time more of these colourfully decorated bikes are passing us. In the square is a stall with T-shirts advertising 'Les 12h de l'Auge". What is it? I soon discover that Les 12h de l'Auge is a tandem bike race held in the old town of Fribourg once a year. It is a relay race that goes for 12 hours and follows a circuit through the old town of Fribourg. The bikes must be decorated and the cyclists in fancy dress! There is colour everywhere!! A variety of prizes are on offer including the most popular. A ballot box is at the T-shirt stall. A cat is sitting on a window sill obviously enjoying the race! Santa is also there. We watch several more circuits and then continue on our walk. Eventually we come to a park and sit on a bench in the shade to have some water. Two little girls aged about 6 are sitting at opposite ends of the seesaw. Each one is wearing shorts and a T-shirt and each one nurses a dolly. They are having a conversation while their dads enjoy a glass of wine together at the picnic table nearby. Two little boys are having a slide while their mum sits on a seat in the shade. We eventually continue on our way home. As we cross the last bridge we watch some young men who have rigged up a flying fox and are enjoying splashing around in the river. Back at our apartment we sit on the terrace in the late afternoon sun and enjoy a glass of pinot gris.".......
