Mürren, Switzerland

Mürren is a tiny ski village less than an hour from Interlaken, well-known because it sits at the base of those famous mountains, the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. To get to Mürren from Interlaken requires two changes but, because it's Switzerland, everything runs like clockwork. The first leg is the normal regional train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen, 20 minutes of breathtaking snow-covered mountain scenery. There are plenty of tourists on the train, sitting in window seats taking photos through the glass. The forests of conifers are covered in snow and the river is full of snow-covered rocks and boulders. It is almost a black and white landscape. Lauterbrunnen station is full of skiers and the second leg of the journey is a ten minute cable car ride to Grütschalp. These big cable cars can take about fifty people. There are a couple of bench seats along the side but it's really meant for standing room only. Almost everyone on it is a skier, just the odd snowboarder. I stand at the end so I can watch the whole journey through the window. The cable car arrives and we exit to begin the third leg - the mountain railway to Mürren. Walking out of Mürren station, I'm hit by the glare of the sun on the pure white snow. My eyes adjust and I realise I'm looking straight at the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. Wow!! There are clouds about but they are clearing. There are a few other tourists doing exactly what I'm doing. Staring at the view and then taking photos. Lots of selfies happening here! The skiers have disappeared! I then spend the next couple of hours enjoying walking through the snow and exploring all the nooks and crannies of Mürren, and of course, admiring those three mountains constantly. One stop though. I find a little restaurant advertising Apple strudel with vanilla sauce and icecream. And it has a view looking directly at those mountains! image

I have been so impressed with my Italian Gore-Tex Scarpa shoes. They have been amazing to wear in the ice and snow. My feet have been completely dry and the soles have fantastic grip. image For More Information www.myswitzerland.com/en/muerren
