Husky Safari, Rovaniemi

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA We were given warm suits to wear at the tour company's office in Rovaniemi before we drove to the husky farm - about ten minutes away. The huskies were already harnessed to the sleds, waiting for their passengers! Each sled needed a driver and a passenger. The optimum number of dogs per sled is six - the two at the front are the lead dogs, the two in the middle are the fastest dogs and the two closest to the sled are the strongest dogs. The only rule is to stop when the dogs need a toilet stop - otherwise it can be a touch messy for the passenger!!! Our dogs didn't seem to understand that they all needed to go at the same time and the first twenty minutes was rather stop start! Some squatted, some cocked their legs and then they'd stop again to do the other!!!!!!! But once we got going it was just exhilarating! Two hours through the conifer forest, then across the frozen lake, then another forest.... absolutely magnificent. We stopped halfway to give the dogs a rest and we had hot berry juice and gingerbread. Occasionally being a passenger could be rather boneshaking but being pulled along by six excited dogs was incredible. I didn't want it to end...
