Dubrovnik, Croatia

"Oh wow!". It sounds such a cliche but that first sight of the city of Dubrovnik was breathtaking. Dubrovnik is a completely walled city with two main entrances, the eastern and western gates. Pile Gate is the gate at the port where our tender boat is tied up. We walked through the archway and "wow". It didn't matter in which direction we looked - the beautiful baroque buildings and the marble streets were just awe-inspiring. The weather was perfect - hot and sunny and the city was crowded with tourists.

IMG_2442IMG_2447 Our plan was to walk right around the city on the walls - 1940-metres in length. There are 5 forts and 16 towers and bastions. My favourite fort - the Lovrjenac Fort built on a 37 metre high rock. People live within the city walls so washing lines are strung between the walls and house windows, little backyards have gardens and fruit trees and there are a few coffee shops and restaurants. It took two hours to completely circumnavigate, as there are so many places to stop and photograph. And of course, at the bottom was a gelateria. It was excellent!!! Hazelnut and mint choc-chip today!
