Jerpoint Abbey

'The Weepers'

Jerpoint Abbey stands on the banks of the Little Arrigle River.  Founded by the Cistercian monks in the 12th century, the abbey is peaceful and picturesque.  We take our map from the Visitor Centre and walk into the abbey itself.  There is restoration work being carried out at the moment but that doesn't bother us.  Jerpoint Abbey is famous for the many carvings it contains.  'The Weepers' is a carved panel on a tomb portraying a group of saints.

One of the highlights of the abbey is the cloister arcade which has some quite unusual carvings for an abbey - not just carvings of saints and bishops, but also carvings of knights and their ladies!

In a conversation with one of the workmen , I learnt that of the four walls making up the cloister arcade, only one was restored in 1953.  No-one has any idea why no other walls were repaired.

The flowers which have self-seeded are all blooming beautifully in the sunshine.  We have morning tea in the grounds and then head towards Waterford.
