Simpson's Gap, NT
We stop at the memorial to John Flynn on our way to Simpson's Gap. The ashes of John Flynn, the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor service are interred under this enormous stone. The original stone came from the Devil's Marbles but the traditional owners of the Devils Marbles wanted it returned. Forty years later the stone was returned and the Arrernte people used one from their land.
Simpson's Gap
Simpson's Gap is probably the most spectacular gap in the West MacDonnell Ranges. It is the cultural home of the Arrernte Aboriginal people who know the area as Rungutjirpa. It is the mythological home of a group of giant goanna ancestors.
My Favourite Ghost Gum
There are many short walks to choose from in the area, some with excellent views of the range. The ancient ghost gums are just beautiful and there are plenty of stands of mulga dotted around.
The Ochre Pits
These colourful layers of red, white and yellow ochre can be found on one of the walks in the area. Ochre is an important part of Aboriginal culture and is used in ceremonies, to paint their weapons and for medicinal purposes.
Alice Springs
On our return to Alice Springs, we walk to the top of Anzac Hill for the best view of Alice. We weren't lucky enough to see any of the wildlife in the desert but the scenery has been spectacular.
