Sydney Harbour Walks
Balmoral Beach to Taronga Park Zoo 267! Finally the stairs from Balmoral Beach come to an end! Standing at the top of the cliff, I am looking directly at the heads. A small cabin cruiser is headed out to sea while a ferry is on its way north, probably to Manly. We head south along the cliff top towards Georges Head where we walk past two gun batteries at Georges Heights. These were constructed between 1871 and 1873 as part of defence plans for the harbour. As we get closer to Georges Head itself, we see another gun battery. It is a perfect spot for fortifications with views of over 180 degrees along the entrance to the harbour. We sit on one of the seats provided and enjoy watching the large number of yachts, boats and ferries work and play on the harbour. The walking tracks in the area are excellent and well maintained. The native bushland has been conserved very well and there is plenty of wildlife around!! We continue our walk around Chowder Bay and down the eastern side of Bradleys Head peninsular. As we round the point and head up the western side towards Taronga Park Zoo, our view changes. We are looking directly at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Standing on a jetty below us is a wedding party. They are having photos taken with this stunning view behind them. Not too far now and we are at the Taronga Zoo jetty, waiting for the ferry to take us back to Circular Quay. An easy walk of around 6km one way.
